Why Your Mac May Run Out of Storage
Mac storage can become full as files, applications, photos, videos, downloads, and temporary data accumulate over time.
Before deleting anything, check which categories are using the most storage. This helps you decide what can be safely removed.
How to Check Mac Storage
1Open System Settings
Open the Apple menu and select System Settings.
2Open General
Select General and then choose Storage.
3Review Storage Categories
Review categories such as Applications, Documents, Photos, and other storage usage.
Ways to Free Up Storage
1. Remove Unnecessary Downloads
Check your Downloads folder and remove files that you no longer need.
2. Review Large Files
Look for large videos, archives, installers, and other files that are no longer required.
3. Remove Applications You Don't Use
Review installed applications and uninstall applications that you no longer need.
4. Review Photos and Videos
Large media files can use significant storage. Review your Photos library and remove duplicate or unnecessary items after confirming that important files are backed up.
5. Empty the Trash
Deleted files may continue to occupy storage until the Trash is emptied.
Before Deleting Files
- Make sure important documents are backed up.
- Do not delete files if you are unsure what they are.
- Check whether a file is still being used before removing it.
- Keep backups of important photos and documents.
When Storage Is Still Full
If your Mac continues to show very little available storage, review the storage categories again and look for large files or applications that may have been overlooked.
You can also restart your Mac and check the Storage section again after macOS has completed its storage calculations.
